What is Domaine du Château de la Mothaye?

Château de la Mothaye is a nearly 200-year-old Loire Valley château. It has been tastefully renovated and is now a beautiful holiday domain offering château apartments, gîtes and holiday homes.
The domain is set in a historic park and extends over 35 hectares of woodland and meadows. And of course, it features a lovely outdoor swimming pool.

Where is Domaine du Château de la Mothaye located?

The domain is located in the small village of Brion, centrally positioned in the Loire Valley in France. It lies between the beautiful historic and tourist cities of Angers and Saumur, close to the Loire River.
This is between Paris and the west coast, approximately 800 km from Utrecht.

What types of accommodation are available?

There are two gîtes (holiday homes) located about 70 metres from the château, in the former caretaker’s house.

  • Gîte “Le Grand Verger” accommodates up to 5 guests.

  • Gîte “Le Petit Verger” accommodates up to 4 guests.

Inside the château itself, there are four château accommodations, where the Dutch owners also live:

  • two large château apartments, each suitable for up to 5 guests,

  • one apartment for up to 3 guests,

  • and one studio for 2 guests.

All accommodations feature a fully equipped kitchen and private bathroom facilities.
The gîtes each have a spacious private terrace. Guests staying in the château accommodations may use the terraces and lounge seating around the château.
There is sufficient space in every accommodation to add a baby cot.
High chairs are also available (please request when booking).

How can I check availability?

Via the “availability” page you can see what is available or already booked per accommodation. You can also view the accommodation details and/or request availability via the contact form.

Who are the owners of Château de la Mothaye?

Erik and Rochelle are the Dutch owners and manage the château and estate. They speak Dutch, English, German and, of course, French.
They became owners in 2011 and have lived full-time in France since 2014 with their three children Mats, Tijn and June, as well as their dog Luna, three cats and a few chickens.

What facilities are available?

The domain offers a large swimming pool with plenty of sun loungers. Private parking is available on the estate.
Electric vehicle charging is available on a limited basis (slow charging only) at the gîtes. Fortunately, there are an increasing number of public charging points in the surrounding area.
Wireless internet (Wi-Fi) is available throughout the property, including on the terraces and near the pool. The connection is fast thanks to the fibre-optic network.
Each accommodation has its own kitchen, private bathroom facilities and a TV with Android internet and/or satellite access.
Bed linen and towels are included: beds are made upon arrival and towels are provided. Pool towels can be rented or brought with you.

Is there air conditioning?

The two gîtes in the former caretaker’s house each have an energy-efficient air-conditioning unit in the living room, which also provides some cooling to the bedroom areas.
The château accommodations do not have air conditioning (this is technically not possible in such a historic building). At night, temperatures usually cool down sufficiently and windows can be opened. Some windows are fitted with mosquito screens, even in the old château rooms.
Fans are available in all bedrooms, in the holiday homes, gîtes and château apartments.

Are there restaurants nearby?

There are many restaurants in the surrounding area, and we are happy to provide recommendations.
Restaurants can be found within walking distance in the village (1.5 km), in nearby villages (around 5 km), along the Loire River (10–15 km), and in the cities of Angers and Saumur.

Is there a supermarket or bakery nearby?

In Beaufort (5 km) you will find several excellent bakeries offering fresh bread.
There is an Intermarché supermarket 3 km away and a Lidl 5 km away.
In Brion, opposite the church (1.5 km), there is a 24-hour bread vending machine offering fresh bread at all times.

Is there a BASIC-FIT nearby?

A brand-new Basic-Fit gym has opened just 3 km from the domain and is still relatively quiet. Simply bring your membership app and you can work out easily.

Is breakfast included?

We do not offer breakfast. You can prepare your own breakfast in your private kitchen, where coffee (Nespresso) and tea are available.

Can I do my laundry?

Guests staying in Gîte Le Grand Verger have their own washing machine and tumble dryer.
Other guests can use our laundry service (EUR 5 per wash).

Can I go cycling or hiking in the area?

There are many beautiful cycling and walking routes through the French countryside, across hills, vineyards and along the Loire River. We have various routes and tips available for our guests.

Are children welcome?

Children are more than welcome at Château de la Mothaye. Baby cots and high chairs are available (please indicate this when booking). Each accommodation offers enough space to place a baby cot.

Are pets / dogs allowed?

Dogs and other pets are allowed in the gîtes (maximum of 2, subject to approval and to be specified when booking).
Unfortunately, pets are not allowed in the château accommodations.

What are the accommodation rates?

Rates depend on the accommodation selected. Each accommodation page provides a clear price list and up-to-date availability for your gîte or château apartment.

What (outdoor) activities are available on the domain?

Guests can enjoy a table tennis table, outdoor games such as pétanque, a few swings and a slide, a trampoline, and of course a large swimming pool for a refreshing dip.

What is there to do in the surrounding area?

There is so much to do: visits to the famous Loire Valley châteaux, exploring the historic cities of Saumur and Angers, two large and well-known zoos nearby, the Terra Botanica discovery park, summer festivals, wine cellar visits and tastings (ask us for insider tips), canoeing on the Loire, or cycling along the river.
You can bring your own bike (secure storage available) or rent one locally.
Or simply stay on the beautiful château estate and enjoy a walk through the park and surrounding forests starting directly from Château de la Mothaye.

Accessibility – guests with reduced mobility

Unfortunately, our accommodations are not suitable for wheelchair users.
The accommodations located in the château are only accessible via a wide château staircase and do not have a lift.
The gîtes are directly accessible from the grounds and parking area.
Gîte Le Grand Verger has its bedrooms and bathroom on the first floor and is therefore not suitable for guests with reduced mobility.
Gîte Le Petit Verger is on one level but does not have adapted facilities such as an accessible bathroom or toilet.
We recommend that guests with specific accessibility requirements contact us in advance so we can assess together whether the accommodation is suitable.
